Josie felt struck down by the man’s statement. It took her a long moment to speak. A dizziness swept over her, forcing her to grab onto the fender of the nearest sheriff’s vehicle.

“I’m sorry. I don’t understand. He was healthy and fine yesterday.”

“Healthy doesn’t stop his kind of death,” the man said.

Josie sagged as if she couldn’t hold up her weight.

“He was murdered?”

“Tell me again, ma’am, how do you know Mr. Masenrud?”

“I don’t, really. He rented us our gear. He gave us canoeing lessons. Then he took us out to Lac Falls and brought us to the cabin there. He was nice and helpful. But beyond that, we don’t know him at all.”

“Where are you from?”

“Los Angeles. We flew in the day before, stayed at a motel in Grand Marais, and then drove up the Gunflint Trail to the Bear Trap Lake outfitter’s yesterday morning.”

The man frowned and seemed to study Josie. “You say you had some real problems. What would those be?”

Josie steeled herself, thinking that there was no way to describe what happened that wouldn’t seem ludicrous. “After Bill left us on the island, someone tried to kill us.”
